In 1993, psychologist and adoptive mother Nancy Newton Verrier published a book entitled 'The Primal Wound’. Verrier suggested that an inherent wound develops as a result of a mother and a child being separated, and that all adoptees (even if adopted at birth) retain memories of this separation, which has profound effects on the emotional and psychological well-being of the child and adult adoptee. This was a distinctly new way of looking at adoption, providing insights into the experiences of abandonment and loss. 'The Primal Wound' emphasizes the importance of pre and peri-natal factors in affecting emotional development and how early traumas can affect physical and emotional well-being.

Does the Primal Wound exist? And if so, how does it affect adopted persons and their loved ones? Join us as we explore these issues in an informative and interactive discussion which will include a panel of adult adoptees, adoptive parents, and an adoption psychologist.

This
discussion will be led by adult adoptee and educator, Jenny Wiseman. Jenny was born and raised in Australia and recently moved to Hong Kong. She is a member of the AFHK Monthly Discussion team and Steering Committee, and is Head of English as an Additional Language at an international school. She has experience presenting to staff and community in her workplace, as well as at The Vine Church, Mind Body Spirit Festival, Thai Church and Petersham AOG.

This event is open to all parents and caregivers, extended family, friends, and domestic helpers, waiting and prospective parents, adult adoptees, professionals and students.
