“Human relationships, and the effects of relationships on relationships, are the building blocks of healthy development.” (National Research Council, 2000).

Research shows that, for parents, what happened in their own childhoods impacts how they parent and the quality of attachment with their children. However, it's not as simple as to say that if we had a tough childhood, our parenting is negatively affected. There's actually a mediating factor, and we'll be exploring it this month in a proactive discussion based on the article below by Daniel Siegel - 'Making Sense of Our Pasts'.

Join us for some informative and animated discussion about what it means to parent from the inside out, and why "we turned out okay" just doesn't cut it anymore. This discussion is applicable to all parents, not only adoptive and foster parents.

"The best predictor of a child’s security of attachment is not what happened to his parents as children, but rather how his parents made sense of those childhood experiences."
