In this talk, Liz Fletcher will explore the Seven Core Issues in Adoption by Silverstein & Kaplan (1982): loss, rejection, guilt and shame, grief, identity, intimacy and mastery/control. Liz will draw on her experience working with foster and adoptive families to illustrate how these issues affect members of the adoptive triad (adoptive parents, birth parents and adoptees) throughout the course of their lives. Awareness and sensitivity to these issues will help parents and professionals recognize when they appear in various ways, and help all to address and work through the issues as they arise. Liz is a Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist and a member of AFHK’s Professional Adoption Support Committee. She developed a specialist interest in fostering and adoption during her doctorate level training at the Tavistock Clinic in London. Liz returned to her birthplace, Hong Kong, two years ago and works at SPOT Interdisciplinary Children’s Therapy Centre.
