Join us for a stimulating podcast discussion on what adopted teens wish their parents could understand based on a radio program by Creating a Family. We will listen to the 50 minute podcast as a group, and discuss along the way. Podcast speaker is Bert Ballard, an adult adoptee and editor of Pieces of Me: Who do I Want to Be?, a collection of essays written by adopted teens and adults.

Topics will include:

  • Are adopted children who aren’t talking about being adopted not thinking about adoption?
  • How do adoptive parents deal with subjects such as race or birth families with older children and teens?
  • What should parents do with children who refuse to discuss adoption?
  • How much should parents protect their children and when should they let them fail?
  • What is narrative burden, and how can teens and families navigate identity issues?
  • The role and experiences of fathers with adopted teens.
  • What should parents do when they do not know the answers to their children’s questions?

This event is open to all parents and caregivers, waiting and prospective parents, adult adoptees, professionals and students.
