Caring for children from difficult beginnings and/or special needs is a demanding labour of love. There are celebratory moments with obvious progress, yet there are tough seasons of struggle and even regression. The level of care required long-term can be overwhelming, leaving little time to look after ourselves. What can we do when we feel out of strength, resources, or even hope? How can caregivers build and maintain their most resilient selves? International speaker Gary Stephens, an adoptive parent of a special needs child, is no stranger to these questions. He will share his insights from his inspirational journey in order to help caregivers and the professionals who support them find ways to thrive and maintain perspective.

Gary Stephens and his wife, Helen, are co-founders of Mother's Choice. While in Hong Kong, they (and their four biological children) fostered and eventually adopted a young boy, Jacob, who was born without eyes. Jacob was traumatized from abandonment and placement in three institutions, and non-verbal as a result of damage in the brain's expressive language area. The family now lives in Colorado, and Jacob is in his early 20’s. Though he has global developmental delay and remains non-verbal, these challenges do not stop them from adventuring together and sharing a close, intimate relationship. Gary is the co-author of Waiting for a Father: Hearing the Heart-Cry of the Orphans of the World.

This event is open to all parents and caregivers, waiting and prospective parents, adult adoptees, professionals and students.
