Every child of adoption or foster care has or has had a birth family somewhere, whether known or unknown. Parents, professionals, and adult adoptees will benefit from understanding birth families' perspectives and experiences. At our March Monthly Discussion, we will be viewing a short American documentary called "The Giving", directed by Mary Firth. As part of her Master's thesis, she was touched by the struggle women go through when they place their children for adoption. Mary decided she needed to give birth mothers a voice. Her emotionally powerful documentary chronicles the difficult journeys of six women from the time they learn of their pregnancy to the signing of adoption papers. "The Giving" explores how and why these women make what is perhaps the most difficult decision a mother could face. Pulling their stories from the shadows of society, this film shatters the myth of the careless, abandoning birthmother, and reveals, once again, that courage and selflessness are found in the most unassuming places. A discussion will follow the documentary. •This meeting is FREE FOR CURRENT AFHK MEMBERS •100HKD for non-members or lapsed members (or see below to join/renew and attend this event for FREE).
