Talking About the Tough Stuff:
Telling Children About Adoption and Other Parts of Their History
Sometimes children of adoption, foster care, or backgrounds of early trauma or loss have challenging or complicated histories. Should this information be shared with the child, and if so, how? Join us for a stimulating discussion based on a podcast on how to talk about adoption, as well as the difficult parts of a child’s history.
We will listen to the 50 minute podcast as a group, and discuss along the way. Podcast panelists are Beth O'Malley, who has written on lifebooks for adopted and foster children, and Angela Magnuson, professional counselor with foster, kinship, and adoptive families. Topics covered will include:
•Why should we share information with children and what good does it do to share difficult information?
•If the child does not remember what happened to them, does s/he need to know?
•When should information be shared and what language can you use with young children to talk about adoption?
•Will telling children about difficult aspects of their past cause shame for them or make them likely to repeat the past?
•How do you help children understand how much of their story should be shared with others outside the family?
•What is a lifebook and how can it be used to help our children understand and process their story?
This event is open for all parents and caregivers, waiting and prospective parents, adult adoptees, professionals and students.
Seating is limited, and pre-registration is required.
