September Monthly Discussion -
Learning, Grades and Homework:
What Lies Beneath in the Brain Development of Children with Early Life Stressors
A brief introduction to the neurological impact of early trauma and its effect on the development of the brain. While we can't really look at the brain, there are common delays or deficits and learning difficulties that can present in children from early adversity, including adopted and foster children. Hopefully through this talk, parents will begin to think like a scientist to tease out the interplay of trauma and learning difficulties, and find the right help for the child. We will also introduce the various types of professionals involved in a child's learning challenges and discuss approaches to collaborate with the school in supporting their child's learning and emotional well being.
Speaker: Dr. Minna Chau is a US-trained clinical child psychologist who has more than 10 years of experience working with Special Educational Needs students in schools. She further obtained training in school neuropsychology to equip her to evaluate neurological disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, as well as specific learning disabilities.
