As a charitable organisation, all of our work depends upon the extraordinary skills of our volunteers.

From organisation of events and activities at Steering Committee level to the running of events at ground level, volunteers make our organisation work!

We are always looking for member volunteers willing to share their skills and time with us, and any amount of time you can generously give would be greatly appreciated!

We may have opportunities in the following areas as well:

1/ Monthly Discussion Team Member

Role Tasks:

  • The Monthly Discussion (MD) is one of our primary AFHK events. Along with the MD Team Coordinator, the MD Team plans dates and topics to be covered during a given year. There are 7-8 MD meetings from September to May, with 2/3 of them being daytime events (usually on Fridays at lunchtime) and 1/3 being evening events.

  • Each MD Team Member serves as the designated organizer for 2-3 meetings per year, spearheading the design and marketing for the meeting with administrative assistance provided.

  • Recruits and liaises with guest speakers, or researches podcasts, articles, videos, and other content related to topics.

  • Works with the MD Team Coordinator, AFHK Administrative Coordinator and other volunteers on preparation and event logistics.

  • Helps facilitate occasional Parent Support Meetings.

  • Assists with room set-up and clean up after MD meetings, helps to greet attendees, introduce speakers, and follows up with any issues afterwards.

  • Most of the planning work will be done virtually. The yearly MD Planning Calendar on Google Docs lists the MD meetings.

Desired skill set: Familiarity with adoption, fostering, or related issues; strong communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills; ability to organize and execute administrative tasks to and follow up with them; comfort with facilitating group discussions and moderate levels of public speaking; ability to learn or use software applications such as Google Docs; interest in maintaining up-to-date knowledge of adoption issues.

2/ Social Media Copy Writer

Role Tasks:

  • Write brief introductions for articles, events, or graphics to be posted on AFHK social media
  • Tag the relevant organization or author when possible to increase the visibility of our posts
  • Send them to designated committee member for review within a few days to a week

Desired skill set: familiarity with Facebook and other basic Social Media platforms, solid writing and grammar skills, ability to write brief introductions to articles that balance professionalism and accessibility

3/ Foster Care Support Team Members 

This position requires attendance at monthly Steering Committee meetings. 2-4 positions; will allocate duties accordingly between the liaisons. 

Role Tasks:

  • Disseminates updates to AFHK on foster care system changes, trends, and challenges that foster families are facing

  • Liaises with local Foster Care agencies to share relevant information and feedback between AFHK and the agencies

  • Stays current on foster-care and foster-related news and issues to share with AFHK team member

  • Organizes and runs foster parent support groups

  • Suggests, organizes and runs any additional desired foster events (with admin support provided)
  • Promotes foster care and best practices for foster care within Hong Kong (aspirational)

  • Work with existing Foster Care Support Team Members (1-2 volunteers, total team of 2-3)

  • Time Commitment: Variable and flexible, estimated 6-10 hours/month inclusive of Steering Committee meeting attendance and foster parent events.

Desired skill set: Strong communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills, aware and informed regarding the needs and experiences of foster parents, familiarity with social media. Preferable for at least one of the two Liaisons to be a Cantonese or Mandarin speaker, and for at least one to have existing social connections with foster parents in Hong Kong through an agency, church, or other network. Background in social services, psychology, or mental health support, also beneficial. 


4/ Marketing Coordinator

Role Tasks:
  • Assess and implement marketing tools and campaigns to achieve the AFHK Social Media goals.
Desired skill set: Understanding of adoption and related issues, strong computer and writing skills. experience with marketing/publicity. experience with Social Media Optimisation (SMO) and Social Media Marketing (SMM), experience with social media platforms and tools including Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, follow the AFHK “Aesthetic” in all SM posts.

    5/ Adult Adoptee Team Member

    Role Tasks:

    • Outreaches to potential adult adoptee members and encourages attendance at events or membership.
    • Works with Steering Committee and Adult Adoptee Team to suggest occasional events for adult adoptees and assists in running them.
    • Works with relevant SC members and Adult Adoptee Team to ensure adult adoptee concerns and perspectives are considered and reflected.

    Desired skill set: Good communication, interpersonal, and networking skills, interest in learning of the range of needs and experiences of adult adoptees, active in social media, groups, or other means of connecting with adult adoptees.

    6/ Membership Assistant

    Role Tasks:

    • Works with Outreach and Program Assistant and Chair to develop initiatives to address new member recruitment and member attrition.
    • Personally makes contact with some new members with particular needs or interests.
    • Reaches out to members who have not been at our events in a while..

    Desired skill set: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, organizational skills, good networking skills, ability to learn or use software applications such as Google Docs and databases.

    7/ Translator (Cantonese)

    Role Tasks:

    • Translate AFHK publicity materials on an ad-hoc basis from English into Chinese.

    • Check previously translated Chinese materials for accuracy.

    • Provide translation at limited bilingual events.

    Desired skill set: Strong command of written and spoken Cantonese and English, outgoing personality, good communication skills.

      The Steering Committee

      Steering Committee Roles

      Those with Steering Committee roles are asked to attend a once per month Tuesday evening Steering Committee Meeting, as well as an all-day Strategy Meeting on Saturdays around 3 times per year. Consideration is given to those who cannot make this commitment, however in general this expectation applies to Steering Committee roles in order to ensure that our organization runs effectively.

      Treasurer:

      • ·  Oversees the keeping of proper books of account which is on a cloud-based Quick Books system. Day to day input of records is handled by the Assistant Treasurer.
      • ·  Periodically checks AFHK website payments which are all automatically recorded by the online system.
      • ·  Ensures availability of financial information to Steering Committee and regular members, and advises Steering Committee regarding financial direction of the organization including preparing annual budget.
      • ·  Assesses budget for occasional larger events (2-3 per year) and liaises with events team on meeting these requirements.
      • ·  Oversees account audits which are electively done every few years for transparency purposes, and liaises with auditing accountant and Assistant Treasurer. (As a registered charity, AFHK is exempt from submitting annual audited accounts.) 
      • ·  Serves as point of contact for AFHK bank account and liaising with bank when required.
      • ·  Desired skill set: Accounting, finance, business, or quantitative experience or background, working knowledge of spreadsheet and accounting software applications, strong communication skills.

      Newly Adoptive Families Coordinator:

      • ·  Liaises with Waiting Families Coordinator to plan programming and find resources tailored for Newly Adoptive Families.
      • ·  Works with Administrative Assistant to ensure greetings are sent to newly adoptive families.
      • ·  Advocates for and updates Steering Committee on the needs of newly adoptive families.
      • ·  Desired skill set: Organized, strong interpersonal skills and communication skills, interested in locating resources and learning about adoption best practices.

      • ·       Organizes occasional events for adult adoptees and facilitates connections between adult adoptees and other relevant parties (e.g. if an adult adoptee wants to be a mentor or volunteer at an event)
      • ·       Works with relevant SC members such as Roots Tracing Coordinator to ensure up-to-date information relevant to adult adoptee concerns.
      • ·       Desired skill set: Good communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, aware and informed regarding the needs and experiences of adult adoptees, active in social media, groups, or other means of connecting with adult adoptees
