All About Siblings
Preparing Children for the Adoption of a Sibling and Integrating Adopted and Biological Children.
Please join us for a stimulating discussion based on a podcast discussing siblings and adoption and the joys and challenges they can bring to the family. If there are children already in the family, parents need to prepare them for the adoption of a new child. How you approach this preparation depends on the age of your children and the age of the child to be adopted as well as other related factors. Panelists are Patricia Irwin Johnston, author of Adopting: Sound Choices, Strong Families and Adoption and Adoption is a Family Affair ; and Karla Thrasher, Executive Coordinator of International Programs with Lifeline Children’s Services, and China Program Director. We will listen to the 50 minute podcast as a group, and discuss along the way. Topics covered will include:
How to prepare children for the adoption of a sibling depending on the age of the children in the home and the age and past history of the child being adopted.
Preparing children when the adoptee comes from a different race than the rest of the family.
Helping with understanding and explaining when you have different degrees of birth and background information for your children.
Handling sibling rivalry between biological children and birth children.
Separating fantasy from reality for children who are about to have a sibling through adoption.
The typical stages families go through post adoption when trying to integrate newly adopted older children into the family.
What to do when your newly adopted kids act out and your existing children (bio or adopted) are embarrassed.
If you would like to listen to the podcast ahead of time, you can find it here at the Creating A Family website:
