We at AFHK often hear parents say, "My child has not experienced trauma"...yet is that accurate? What is trauma and how are children affected by it?  And how is this relevant to adoptive/foster families and the professionals who work with them? Join us for a stimulating podcast discussion by Creating a Family. We will listen to the 50-minute podcast as a group, and discuss along the way. Podcast speaker is Sue Badeau, who along with her husband is the lifetime parent of twenty adopted children and foster parent to more than 50 children. They are authors of the book "Are We There Yet: The Ultimate Road Trip Adopting and Raising 22 Kids". Sue has worked in the field of child welfare for over 30 years and has developed curriculum and training for social workers and parents.

Topics will include:

  • What is trauma and how would I know if a child has experienced it?
  • What factors are important at determining how kids respond to trauma?
  • How important is the type of abuse, age and developmental stage of the child in determining how kids respond?
  • How is parenting a child who has experienced trauma different than parenting a child that has not?
  • Tips for parents and others to help children cope with trauma and facilitate attachment.

Parent Support Meeting: 1:30-2:30pm

We've revamped our Parent Support Meeting with a new format! It will be an informal gathering held 2-3 times a year, immediately following our Monthly Discussion. We'll gather in two smaller groups to share experiences and ideas in a supportive environment. One group will focus on general parenting concerns while the other will discuss parenting children with attachment and behavioral issues. There is no extra fee for this portion of the meeting - just register for the Monthly Discussion; those who cannot stay for both meetings can just come for either the Monthly Discussion or the Parent Support Meeting.

This event is open to all parents and caregivers, waiting and prospective parents, adult adoptees, professionals and students.

FREE FOR MEMBERS
